What Is A Traffic Exchange?

Traffic exchanges are exactly what the name implies. You "exchange" or "trade" site visits with other members of the traffic exchange and thereby increase the number of "hits" or visits to your business or program. There are two traditional types of traffic exchanges available - Manual Surf and Auto Surf - although two other types - Banner Exchanges and Search Bar - are also now very popular.

Manual Traffic Exchange:
A manual traffic exchange requires that it's members spend an allotted amount of time viewing other members sites after which you click on an image of some type. In return you earn a specified amount of credits which are then used to show your site to the other members. The length of time spent viewing a site usually ranges from 10 to 20 seconds. The number of credits earned will depend on the surf ratio which you have. Your surf ratio usually depends on your level of membership. Normally surf ratios are set similar to 2:1 or 1:1 meaning you receive one viewing per two sites seen etc. Different traffic exchanges will use different ratios of course.

Auto Surf Traffic Exchange:
Auto Surf traffic exchanges are also credit based with the difference being that you don't have to click. After the specified time interval, the next site is rotated into view. Although auto surfs are a great way to increase your visitor count, they will not necessarily increase your sales. The member is not required to actually view the sites and for that reason this type of traffic exchange is sometimes called a "set and forget'. This does not mean that they are not useful; it just indicates that the conversion ratio will be lower.

There are many traffic exchanges which now offer a combination of the two basic types and with of banner exchanges etc the promotion possibilities with traffic exchanges are becoming much more varied.
